Acer campestre - new material. I thought the tree was smaller when I saw it on a collection site...but, it turned out to be a very large stump. Trunk is hollow, but seems very healthy with good calousing over all wounds. Now, potted, looks like this tree has an inverted taper and that it's thinner approaching nebari but that's not true. Nebari is very good and wide...almost like a box in which it's planted. Now, covered with substrate, looks like tree has inverted taper problem.
The only problem regarding this tree is size. I thought I won't collect any more trees that are so big but, it seems ..it's not working.
At the end, I am very happy with this finding because I know that Acer campestre is not so easy to find in form of a good and interesting bonsai starter material. And this one is good.
ridiculously 'awesome' campestre-stump! I am quite sure, after some growing seasons, along with a solid bit of carving, wiring, exposing the nebari...you will feel adrenaline in your veins with this tree, when you see it turns out to be a bonsai carrying the beast of nature within. greets, Yves from belgium
ReplyDeleteI was also surprised...I thought it is not so good...turned out to be better than I suspected :)
DeleteDear Sebastijan,
ReplyDeletewhen did you collect the tree? Are you aleady in collecting season?
We have to wait 1,5-2 month more in northern Germany.
Dear Anonymous...
DeleteTree was collected one week ago...
Well, this is a bit early for acer campestre inland, although, it doesn't really matter. As long as the tree is protected from extremes of the weather it's ok.
I think this tree would be ok even without protection...this is a continental local species well adjusted to low temperatures around my home. But, I do winter protect routinely newly collected stuff...and in my winter shelter it's +2C. That means it really doesn't matter if tree is collected now, in February.
sory to ask, what kind of substrate is this?
ReplyDeleteThis is floreopor...a type of expanded clay. No different than Maxit or pomice...very similar.. Together with floreopor I just add a few handfull of good peat.
DeleteThat's it
Hi Sebastijan,
ReplyDeletea few handfull of peat?!?
You as one of Walter´s "disciples" ;-) use peat?
I remeber his substrate, feeding, watering article were he absolutely denuies any organic material...
Do you only use it in the recovery process?
Regards
Nelson
Well Nelson, as you see, I don't listen Walter in everything he sais :)
DeleteNo, I use peat regularily in bonsai mix. I do not believe in sterile mixes in bonsai. I even put crushed tree bark in the mix, together with some peat...yes, I know it gives acidic reaction to substrate but it suits my trees well. It also promotes miccorhyza in the substrate
